Admin History | There had been an active movement for the separation of Southgate from Edmonton from 1875. This was led by Sir Ralph Littler QC who had moved into Broomfield House in 1874. A group of residents from the western district petitioned the Local Government Board for separation alleging neglect and maladministration by the Edmonton Board of Health. This led to a public enquiry conducted by a Local Government Board inspector called Arnold Taylor. He found the complaints largely justified but did not recommend separation. Littler continued to campaign for separation. In 1880 a Bill was presented to Parliament to separate the western district from Edmonton. The Separation Bill was opposed in the Commons by Sir Henry Tyler. He failed and it was referred to a Parliamentary Committee. The committee stage took place in May and June 1881 when many witnesses were called for both sides. Separation finally took effect later in 1881. |
